Graz Insider:innen your very personal recommendations for the city:
Fanny Justich Founder and manager "Fanny et Mari"
Fanny Justich studied architecture at the Graz University of Technology and in Paris. While working in an architectural office, she discovered more and more her passion for detail and furniture making. Finally, she founded the label Fanny et mari in 2010. Fanny is responsible for the creative part and the implementation, her husband (French "mari") for the technical know-how. The starting point for her work is always old things she finds at flea markets, on journeys and in shops. Working together, they create objects with a sense of humour that are suitable for everyday use.
You transform old goods into new unique design pieces: What is the attraction of old things for you? Old things always have a history and thus their own life.
Fifties and Sixties design in Graz: Are there any particular favourite spots here? Yes, in Glacisstraße Die Wunderkammer and in Annenstraße Café Wolf.
Your personal design classic? At the moment, a side table with club legs by the Austrian designer Max Kment, the Resi table.
Buying furniture in Graz: Where do you go? To Paulina near the Orpheum.
The most charming café in Graz? The Café Parkhouse in the Stadtpark.
Form or function? In my case, form first, but always with function.
Your vintage flea market or vintage shop recommendation in Graz? I recommend Aida in Sparbersbachgasse and the flea market in the hall at Schwarzlsee.
Peter Schernhuber Festivalleiter / Festival director bis / till 2022 "Diagonale Festival of Austrian Film".
From 2015 to 2022 Peter Schernhuber directed the Diagonale together with Sebastian Höglinger. The festival of Austrian film takes place every year in spring in Graz.
Graz - City of Design: your personal Graz design highlights? Theworks of the Graz graphic artist Karl Neubacher, for example for the ForumStadtpark, Alice Stori Liechtenstein's annual design exhibitions in Schloss Hollenegg, the interior at Delikatessen Frankowitsch, especially the tap system, the drinks menu at the Ernst Fuchs Bar, the double spiral staircase in Graz Castle, the interplay of architecture and exhibition design in the Künstlerhaus - Halle für Kunst und Medien, thePatina in the old Rechbauerkino, the flower display of the Burgflorist, the façade of Camera Austria, the botanical garden of the Karl Franzens University, the work of the designer Alexander Kada, projects in which the brand developer Karin Novozamsky is involved.
Design in your everyday life? Never without my pencil, because hardly any tool is as reliable as a good pencil, and sometimes it looks good on top of that. guided graz 20/21
Design & Handicraft: In which Graz shop does that go together perfectly? It may sound absurd: For me, the tastefully and visually unmistakable pretzels from the Strohmayer bakery, which you can get in Graz at the corner of Herrengasse and Hans-Sachs-Gasse, for example. Unpretentious and supposedly unspectacular, but authentic and only available in Graz.
What is your personal favourite design city? Possibly those cities that don't carry this label around as an attitude.
A film director is a guest. Where do you go to eat? Which hotel do you recommend? In the late morning at best on rolls and a whistle to Delikatessen Frankowitsch. In the evening and at best without time pressure to Laufke in Elisabethstraße, and if there is still time afterwards to Mr Helmut in the Ernst Fuchs Bar. Depending on your preferences and expectations, I recommend one of Helmut Marko's hotels (Schlossberghotel, Lendhotel, Augarten Art Hotel, Kai 36) or the classically elegant Parkhotel in Leonhardstraße. A classic in Graz are the Weitzer Hotels (Grand Hotel Wiesler, Das Weitzer and Daniel).
Eberhard Schrempf Geschäftsführer / Managing director Creative Industries Styria
Eberhard Schrempf has been developing and networking the creative potential of Styria for many years. As a cultural manager and designer, he was the managing director and vice-director of Graz 2003 European Capital of Culture GmbH and was responsible for the successful inclusion of Graz as a UNESCO City of Design in the worldwide network of Creative Cities (UCCN).Among many other projects and formats, Schrempf launched Designmonat Graz in 2009 and has been networking the regional design scene across the globe ever since. As an expert on design and the creative industries, he is a sought-after speaker and panelist at numerous international conferences.
Graz - City of Design: your personal design highlights in Graz? Of course, the Designmonat Graz in May - the festival for design aficionados with more than 100 events, exhibitions, workshops etc. As part of the Design in the City format, those interested can discover over 30 stores and designers, and throughout the year there are constantly exciting exhibitions at designforum Steiermark. A visit to Vito Acconci's Murinsel is a must anyway.
Design in your everyday life? Never without my glasses from Andy Wolf Eyeware and my bag from mapbagrag, because I support authentic local design products with the Styrian Products programme.
Design & Handicraft: In which shop in Graz do they go together perfectly? There are many: Lena Hoschek's first flagship store, the hat manufacturer Kepka, the solid wood tables by Raimund Gamerith, the lovingly renovated chairs by Ox&Bear or from Martina Sperl's upholstery workshop, to name just a few.
What is your personal favourite design city? Definitely Istanbul. Hundreds of years, cultures, religions and continents collide here - and the result is an incredible diversity.
You have a partner from another City of Design as a guest. Where do you go for dinner? Which hotel do you recommend? We go out to eat at Santa Clara in Bürgergasse, everything is just right there and it's also a good place to talk. As a hotel, I recommend Das Weitzer, a classic with an urban character in the city centre.
